A mini excavator is a category or rather a sub category of heavy machines that weigh lesser than six metric tons within the various excavator categories. Mini excavators are amongst the most popular machines that are taken for hire by construction outfits from heavy machine rental companies mainly due to the compact sizes of these machines.

The small sizes of mini excavator are the main driver behind the machine’s popularity as the compactness of this small, nimble and powerful machine allows it to be utilised in the tightest of spaces with ease. The ability to fit through narrow corridors and work in congested areas or indoors are critical for projects in urban areas or in residential areas where space is more often than not quite limited.

As an example, a mini excavator below the 2T category is often taken for hire by homeowners for their home improvement projects as these machines lower project costs significantly as lesser manual labour is required. A mini excavator’s size and power (the power ratio increase of mini excavators in the past decade has doubled) allows operators to work in the tightest of spaces such as between buildings, narrow alleys, backyards or even indoors which are project areas where standard sized excavators become impractical.

The modern mini excavator has also been developed into a multi-purpose tool which means that a single mini excavator could perform tasks such as compacting, drilling, crushing, digging, excavating, grading and clearing among others with the right extended hydraulic tool fitted to the machine. By ‘extended’ hydraulic tool, what is meant is that, the latest mini excavator models come with hydraulic attachment links which enable these machines to be fitted with an array of hydraulic attachments.

Hydraulic attachments such as augers, compactors, rippers, crushers and hammers could be easily affixed to these machines without the operator of the machine even having to exit the cab. These added hydraulic attachments for excavators are generally available for hire separately or added on as packages when the mini excavator rental is confirmed.

Apart from the mechanical features, the physical characteristics of the mini excavator which includes light weight and rubber tracks offer minimal ground disturbance which offers a lot of benefits to contractors who take on projects that are strapped to sensitive ground (landscaped surfaces or wooden surfaces).

Small excavators are also at the forefront of heavy machine electrification efforts by manufacturers who are attempting to achieve zero emission objectives give the current sustainability and environmental challenges that the world is faced with.

Electric mini excavators are easily available in the market and these models have gained traction with the urban construction sphere owed to the zero emission and low noise that these machines exert. Compact machines are also easily transportable and do not require large vehicles to move them from storage to project sites, in most case scenarios, pick-up trucks would suffice to manage transportation of these machines.

In many ways, compact machines, regardless if they are excavators or other types of heavy machines are becoming the primary ‘go to’ machines for urban construction projects.
